About Pets and DPI

In Victoria, legislation aims to encourage responsible pet ownership, to protect the community from dangerous or nuisance animals, and to prevent animal neglect and cruelty. DPI is responsible for overseeing the development of this legislation, along with associated Regulations and Codes of Practice.

The legislation gives local councils power to control dogs and cats living within their boundaries. It also sets standards for domestic animal businesses, in order to protect animal welfare and the rights of consumers.

In addition to overseeing legislation, DPIs Bureau of Animal Welfare consults with stakeholders regarding domestic animal management and welfare issues, and conducts a training and advisory program for local government. The Bureau also implements a Responsible Pet Ownership Schools Education Program, along with the “We are family” program.
