Forestry on Public Land
DPI is responsible for forest industries policy in Victoria. This involves the development of commercial native and plantation forestry policy, supporting the Minister for Agriculture and Food Security to fulfill his duties relating to VicForests and supervising forestry operations in other parts of Victoria where VicForests does not operate.
DPI coordinates and assigns Timber Harvesting Operators Licences across the state and is responsible for the management and licensing of commercial operations in State forests not covered by VicForests.
VicForests, a government business enterprise, is responsible for the sustainable harvest, regeneration and commercial sale of timber from several State forests in Eastern Victoria.
The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) is the state’s public land manager and environmental regulator. DSE also manages all aspects of domestic firewood production and the sale of some minor forest products throughout the state.

Timber Allocation Order
