Hazard Control Strategies - Portable Saw-Milling

As with harvesting operations the hazards associated with log handling and machinery operation in portable sawmilling operations are significant. Only trained, competent people should attempt to undertake such activities.

Section 30 Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 requires suppliers of plant to provide information about the intended purpose(s) of the plant and any conditions for its safe use to any person they supply.

Issue Typical Problems Possible Solutions
Struck by debris Material flies from saw blade back towards the operator

Do not stand in the cutting line of the saw.
Exclude other person from area
Always wear personal protective equipment:
eye protection and hard hat,

Fingers and limbs lacerated Operators fingers or limbs coming into contact with saw blade.

Saw blades and moving parts are guarded
Lockout procedures are followed and must be used during:
Adjusting or changing saw blades,
Cleaning,
Mechanical or electrical maintenance
Ensure the machine cannot be operated while hands are still in contact with the material being cut.
Wear gloves when changing saw blades
Wear close fitting clothing

Slips trips and falls Uneven ground and debris
