Plantation health surveillancePlantation health surveillance

The plantation health surveillance project aims to:

  • increase awareness of the importance of biosecurity, knowledge of significant threats and an understanding of basic surveilance techniques.
  • promote adoption of regular forest health surveillance practices by farm forestry practictioners.

Field guide

In order to improve forest biosecurity DPI has published "A Field Guide to Plantation Health Surveillance in Victoria".

Written by eminent entomologists and plant pathologists from the University of Melbourne, it is designed to encourage and facilitate growers of smaller, private plantations to take an active and informed role in ensuring the ongoing health of their plantations, especially with regard to insect pests and pathogens.

The Guide (RRP $20) is available from the Information Victoria Bookshop, 505 Little Collins Street, Melbourne or phone 1300 366 356

WorkshopsPlantation health surveillance workshops

DPI have previously provided plantation health surveillance workshops where farm foresters will learn about insect pests and diseases and how to set up and monitor surveillance plots in their plantations. Materials and help to set up the plots has also been provided.

There are no workshops planned at the moment but interest can be registered through the project managers.

Surveillance forms, submitting samples and further information

Forms for regular assessment of surveillance plots, and the submission of samples for identification of pests and pathogens, are provided here.

Please contact the project managers Sue Harris or Bruce Sonogan for further information.
