Projects and initiatives
Timber Industry StrategyThe Victorian Government has been developing a new Timber Industry Strategy to provide a framework and long-term direction for the Victorian timber industry for the next 20 years.
Farm Forestry Plan
An action plan will be developed to set DPI directions for integrating productive tree growing into the farming landscape in Victoria. This will be under the guidance of the Timber Industry Strategy.
Farm forestry best practice and industry facilitation
Building the capacity of the industry to service growers with an emphasis on improved silviculture and genetics, coupled with promoting the multiple benefits of farm forestry, all delivered via the DPI Forestry web portal and relevant service providers within the forestry sector.
Plantation biosecurity and health surveillanceDelivered as part of an integrated DPI Biosecurity framework and with an emphasis on raising awareness, preparedness and skills in forest health surveillance amongst farm foresters.
Plantation climate preparednessFacilitating increased self reliance and preparedness for climate change amongst plantation growers and understanding of tree-based responses.
Previous projects and initiatives
Contact current DPI staff for information on the following projects and initiatives of DPI and its predecessors.
Plantations for Greenhouse (2000-2005)
The Plantations for Greenhouse project (2000-2005) aimed to support landholders in growing plantations for carbon sequestration in addition to all of the regular economic and environmental benefits. The project resulted in 1400 hectares of sawlog plantations, which will absorb around 500,000 tonnes of CO2 over 30 years.
Sawlogs for SalinitySawlogs for Salinity was the first project to be funded by the Plantations Incentive Strategy, and a part of the Moving Forward Together initiative, announced by the government in December 2005, which supports investment in provincial Victoria.
North East Firewood Plantation Project
The project offered landholders the opportunity to gain assistance to establish plantations for firewood production from 2004 to 2006. Assistance was provided in the form of ripping and in some cases mounding sites, as well as supplying and planting seedlings during the first year.
Re-Use Irrigated Private Plantations
Transforming waste into resources is an important part of Victorias move toward sustainability. And transformation is exactly whats happening when we combine wastewater management with timber production.
West RFA Sawlog Farming Project
The West RFA Sawlog Farming Project (2002) was part of Growing Victorias Forests - an initiative of the State Government of Victoria. The Project facilitated the growing and management of native hardwoods on previously cleared agricultural land for sawlog production.
The Government initiated the Farm Tree$ Planning Service to contribute toward the State Private Forestry Strategy at the time, which aimed to treble the commercially focused tree plantings on private land by the year 2020.
