The Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 (FFG Act) lists fish classified as threatened species in Victoria and may not be taken without authorisation. The list can be found in Schedule 2 of the FFG Act at Victorian legislation and Parliamentary Documents or by calling 136 186.
Protected fish encountered by anglers include:
- trout cod
- Australian grayling
- Tasmanian whitebait (pictured)
- brown and dwarf galaxias
Recreational fishing for some FFG-listed species has been authorised by an exemption. With reference to regulations in this guide, the following protected fish may be taken:
