Trout and Salmon Regulations

Victoria’s streams and lakes are classified into groups for the purposes of regulating salmonid fisheries (rainbow trout, brown trout and Chinook salmon). Each group of waters is defined by whether or not it has a closed season for salmonids and the daily bag limit.

Lakes & Impoundments

lake trout

Minimum legal size: no minimum
Bag/possession limit: 5
Closed season: no

The boundary between a lake and a river is the point at which the flowing water of the river meets the backed-up waters of the lake, regardless of the water level of the lake.

Not all waters provide year-round conditions for stocking. For up-to-date information call the DEPI Customer Service Centre on 136 186.

Some sections of the Goulburn, Mitta Mitta, Tanjil and Kiewa rivers are closed to all hook and line fishing during the salmonid closed season, regardless of the fish species being targeted.

Family Fishing Lakes

trout used

Minimum legal size: no minimum
Bag/possession limit: 5 salmonids per day, of which no more than 2 may exceed 35cm
Closed season: no

These fisheries all occur in lakes, ponds or retarding basins, generally smaller than 3ha.

They are usually stocked prior to the 2nd and 3rd school term breaks. This provides angling opportunities for junior anglers and people with limited mobility. Stocking is dependant on water quality and approval from water managers.
