Sustainable Energy Technologies

Victoria has a wide range of renewable resources that have the potential to meet a significant proportion of our energy needs in a sustainable way. Over the past six years, the Victorian Government has committed more than $162 million to drive advances in pre-commercial sustainable energy technologies such as solar, biomass conversion, geothermal and clean distributed energy as part of its Energy Technology Innovation Strategy (ETIS).

ETIS is designed to accelerate these sustainable energy technologies relevant to Victoria, and low emission coal technologies, to the commercially ready stage so that the renewable energy industry can meet increasing market demand for green power.

Current sustainable energy projects

Victorian Government support for sustainable energy projects includes:

  • Re-allocation of $30 million in uncommitted funds to provide competitive grants for renewable energy pilot and R&D technology projects. Visit the ETIS page for further information.
  • $50 million grant to establish one of the world’s largest and most efficient solar photovoltaic concentrator demonstration projects in regional Victoria. Visit the Solar Systems page for further information.
  • $25 million grant for Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Geelong Geothermal Power Plant. Visit the geothermal energy page for further information.
  • $8.1 million for Sustainable Energy Research and Development Grants supporting new renewable energy technologies. For further information visit the Sustainable Energy Research and Development page.
  • $29 million for the Centre for Energy and Greenhouse Technologies (CEGT) which provides investment funds to support the development of new sustainable energy and greenhouse reduction technologies to a pre-commercial stage. For further information visit the Centre for Energy and Greenhouse Technologies page.

Australian Government support

The Commonwealth Government recently announced $652.5 million to establish the Renewable Energy Future Fund, to support Australia’s response to climate change. This is in addition to the $2 billion Clean Energy Initiative announced in May 2009. Read more about Renewable Energy Future Fund.
