Energy Emergencies
In most cases when the lights go out, it is your local gas or electricity distribution business that is responsible for repairing their infrastructure and restoring power to their area.
Overall energy supply and demand is managed by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). They make sure that there is enough power being generated and sent into the grid to meet our needs at any given time and work to minimise shortages if major energy infrastructure is damaged.
During storms or fires, if there is major energy infrastructure damage, demand for power can be greater than the supply available, and some customers may have their power switched off for a short time. This is called load shedding.
The Victorian Government also has additional emergency powers available if there is a serious threat to power or gas supplies. As with water, it can impose restrictions if a major shortfall in energy supplies were imminent.
DPI, AEMO and Energy Safe Victoria work together through established processes during emergencies.
