Innovation and Research - Energy

A researcher in the lab

Victoria has extensive lignite (brown coal) reserves, making it a low cost option to produce the state's electricity. However, as we move to reduce carbon emissions its use becomes more problematic.

Overcoming this challenge requires leadership from Government and a well-coordinated approach, working with industry and research organisations to ensure the success of new, low-emission energy technologies. These include renewable energy options and innovative technologies for low emission  uses of coal.

The Government supports technologies likely to be the most practical, commercial, cost effective and attractive to investors.
