Previous Year's Statistical Review

Earth Resources Division produces an annual Statistical Review at the end of the fiscal year. It includes statistical summaries of petroleum exploration, production activity, and reserves.

Field Descriptions

Detailed descriptions of Gippsland and Otway basin fields, including production histories, are provided within the following two documents, available for free download from the Online Store:

Gas Markets

Earth Resources Division administers upstream petroleum exploration and production and the construction of transmission pipelines. Information on the operation of the downstream gas markets can be found at the following sites:

VENCorp

  • acts as independent system operator for the gas transmission network
  • manages and develops the competitive wholesale gas market
  • provides planning services for gas and electricity
VENCorp has responsibilities under the Gas Industry Act 1994, the Third Party Access Code for Natural Gas Pipelines and the Market System Operation Rules.

As part of its planning role, VENCorp produces an Annual Gas Planning Review (under Gas/Transmission Planning/Planning Reviews). These documents include gas demand forecasts, reported available and prospective supply and modelled system capacity.

Consultants have reviewed and reported on the Victorian gas market. These include NIEIRRISC,ACIL Tasman and Wood-Mackenzie (external links). Disclaimer: By listing these studies, Earth Resources Division does not take responsibility for their content. Other studies may be available.

The Essential Services Commission (external link) has overtaken the role of the Office of the Regulator - General, as the independent economic regulator for industries including gas. The ESC regulates gas distribution and retailing pursuant to the Gas Industry Act 1994 and the Essential Services Commission Act 2001.

Office of Gas Safety (external link) is responsible for monitoring and promoting gas safety under the Gas Safety Act 1997. It deals with the operation (but not construction) of gas transmission pipelines, downstream of gas processing plants.
