Under the Victorian Nuclear Activities (Prohibitions) Act 1983, exploring for or mining uranium or thorium orebodies is prohibited in Victoria. The objectives of this legislation are to protect the health, welfare and safety of the people of Victoria, to limit deterioration of the environment in which they dwell, and to support the Commonwealth of Australia in meeting its international nuclear non-proliferation objectives.
