Earth Resources Core Library
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Core Library is a facility used for the storage and inspection of rock specimens. These specimens are derived from minerals and petroleum exploration in both onshore and offshore Victoria, and geoscientific mapping projects undertaken across the state. This collection of specimens provides invaluable information to assist in the search for new mineral deposits and petroleum reserves, to aid in structural and stratigraphic interpretations, and to provide a range of additional geoscientific information.
The DPI Core Library contains specimens dating back to the nineteenth century. The collection consists of rock cores, cuttings and side-wall core from over 12,000 onshore and offshore water, coal, mineral and petroleum drilling operations, as well as specimens from mapping projects and other geoscientific investigations. Under legislation, these specimens are kept confidential until their eventual release for public examination, allowing scientifically and economically significant rock specimens to be further investigated without the additional cost of new exploration. This arrangement helps to increase the efficiency and also decrease the cost of exploration in Victoria, promoting the state as a good investment destination.
The DPI actively collects petroleum core and cuttings according to the requirements of the relevant Petroleum Acts and Petroleum Submerged Lands Acts, and representative samples from mineral exploration conducted under the Minerals Resources (Sustainable Development) Act. For information on core submission requirements please see the guidelines. As the Core Library is only open to the public as needed, sample delivery is strictly by prior arrangement. Please contact the DPI at least one week prior to the intended delivery.
The DPI invites members of the public to examine and sample specimen stored at the Core Library. A digital catalogue of specimens held in the Core Library can be obtained from the DPI. The DPI reserves the right to refuse sampling, for instance, where there is a lack of remaining specimen. In order to efficiently access the specimen, clients should contact the DPI at least a week prior to their intended visit. As a condition of access, the DPI requires the submission of a properly documented report detailing all of the findings of examination and analyses. The DPI will keep this report confidential as specified by the relevant legislation. The sample examination area is not heated or air-conditioned so please dress accordingly and note that safety boots are recommended.
The Core Library is located in Agriculture Victoria’s State Research Farm in Werribee, Victoria, approximately 40 minutes southwest of Melbourne. The library is at 18 South Road, via Sneydes Road, (Melways map reference 206, E8). Access from Melbourne is via the West Gate Freeway to the Princes Freeway (Geelong Road), then take the first Werribee exit.
