Prospectivity - Onshore geological carbon storage report

GeoScience Victoria has produced a comprehensive technical assessment of the offered Geological Carbon Storage (GCS) exploration tender areas. The report, entitled: Geological carbon storage potential of the onshore Gippsland Basin, Victoria, Australia, evaluates the relative prospectivity of the onshore region from a geological carbon storage viewpoint. It considers three principal technical themes, namely:

  • Containment: understanding where CO2 will be contained in the deep sub-surface (the distribution and capacity of the fine grained sealing rocks deep sub-surface).
  • Injectivity & Storage Potential: understanding how much CO2 can be safely put into the deep sub-surface (the quality, thickness and distribution of the porous sand reservoirs in the deep sub-surface).
  • Impacts: understanding where any injected CO2 will migrate to, in what timeframe and what effects might it have on existing hydrocarbon resources and infrastructure, on undiscovered hydrocarbon and other resources and on the physical and man-made environment?

The report provides a comprehensive description of the GCS play fairways and components in the region and also includes a comprehensive evaluation of the available geoscience information for the region.
