Alpine Resorts 2020 Strategy
The Alpine Resorts 2020 Strategy was released on 12 June 2004 at Mount Buller by the then Minister for Environment.
The Alpine Resorts 2020 Strategy has been prepared to guide the long term planning and management of Victoria's six alpine resorts: Falls Creek, Lake Mountain, Mount Baw Baw, Mount Buller, Mount Hotham and Mount Stirling. The resorts are unique assets facilitating access to a scarce resource - the Australian alpine environment.
Alpine resort tourism is a product strength for Victoria and is limited to very small areas. Up to 1.4 million people visit the alpine resorts each year. As many as a third of these visitors enjoy the resorts outside the traditional snow season. Participation in a broader range of non winter alpine experiences is growing.

The Alpine Resorts 2020 Strategy lists a 'statement of strategic direction' for each of six broad issues which need to be addressed to realise the vision of:
Four season, vibrant, sustainable resorts
These broad issues are:
- Climate change
- Resort use and visitation
- Development of the resorts
- Vibrant resorts
- Environmental management
- Stewardship of public land
The Alpine Resorts 2020 Strategy also identifies future opportunities for each resort which aims to provide a picture of how each resort may look in the future together with a range of experiences which could be available to visitors.
For each action in the Alpine Resorts 2020 Strategy, an agency has been identified to be accountable for its implementation and other major stakeholders with an interest or responsibility have been listed as ‘partners’.
The strategy will be reviewed in 5 years to make sure it is still relevant. Groups responsible for implementing actions will be required to report on their progress.
