Guidelines for Managing Damage Caused by Common Brushtail Possums in Municipal Parks
The high number of possums in many urban municipal parks and gardens in Melbourne and some large regional centres may be causing significant damage to ornamental plants. This may lead to some park management problems for councils.
The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) has developed a set of guidelines for municipal councils to help manage possum populations and minimise damage. The guidelines are intended to assist Local Government parks and gardens managers, staff, (including Environmental Officers), and licensed wildlife controllers.

Change in Legislation - Governor in Council Order (GIC)
The guidelines have been developed due to a recent change in legislation that permits Local Government to reduce the number of Common Brushtail Possums in municipal parks and gardens where a clearly documented possum management strategy has been prepared.
