Research and Development | Current Research | Research Permits
Legislation and policy relevant to research and specimen collection on public land includes:
- Wildlife Act 1975 (Vic): under this Act, a permit is required to collect specimens of wildlife, including live or dead specimens, including bones, feathers, hair, etc, or to conduct observational studies where the behaviour of the animals may be affected. (Refer to the Plants and Animals page for further details.)
- Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 (Vic): under this Act, a permit is required to collect specimens of protected flora, including flowers, herbarium specimens, seeds, nuts, whole plants or plant parts. (For commercial collection of plant material, a Forest Produce Licence is required.) A permit is also required under this Act in order to collect or catch and release protected fish species.
- Forests Act 1958 (Vic): Under this Act a permit may be required to remove timber, dig forest produce, take away forest produce or any other purpose related to a State Forest or forest produce.
In addition to the above permits, a forests research permit is required for any research in State Forests. This is to ensure that forest managers are aware of the research, that the site for the project will be suitable and also to ensure the safety of all users of the forest.
