Landcare Groups

The Landcare Groups map provides an overall picture of the approximate location of Landcare and other community groups throughout the region. The locations of these groups (in year 2000) were provided by the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Bendigo.

Landcare Groups - Wimmera

Project Platypus (external link) is a consortium of Landcare Groups throughout the Upper Wimmera region which aims to improve land and water quality of the Upper Wimmera catchment. Some land rehabilitation works undertaken throughout 1998/99 included:

Erosion gully control near Mt. Drummond.
Gully erosion and saline discharge treatment near Elmhurst.
Gully erosion and pasture management on the Glendhu Creek near Landsborough. (Wimmera Mallee Water, 1999).

The Hindmarsh Landcare Network (which began in 1997) includes seventeen Landcare Groups, covering the whole Hindmarsh Shire and the Northern section of the West Wimmera Shire. One project undertaken in August, 1998, involved 200 local and 130 Melbourne people planting 22 000 trees along 16 km of roadside in one weekend, rejoining the Big and Little Deserts for the first time in 100 years (Field, 1999).
