Surface Water Management

The Wimmera Catchment Management Authority (CMA) (external link) is responsible for surface water management in the region. An outline of the ‘Healthy Waterways Program’ is available within the CMAs website.

Some of the main surface water management issues in Wimmera region of Victoria relate to storage levels, efficiency of usage, environmental impacts of water usage (particularly salinity), access rights and transferability, irrigation allocations/restrictions and wastewater reuse. The most immediate concern with respect to surface water in the region is the current storage levels. These are at their lowest point recorded for the region since prior to 1985 at only 33% of capacity in 1999 (Wimmera Mallee Water website). Efficient and thoughtful use of this scarce resource must prevail in the region to avoid drought in the near future.
