The Wimmera Region is set to realise its potential in Agribusiness and resource industry development in the near future. Industrial development is supported by extensive infrastructure, including international ports, which are located within four hours reach of most centres in the region.

Developments will also be strengthened by willing regional bodies who assist viable projects which diversify farming or add value to the region’s produce. Enterprises with future development potential existing in the district include:
  • Agriculture: Cropping, Pasture (meat and intensive livestock, and animal feed products), Horticulture, Viticulture and Wool.
  • Agro Forestry: Woodchipping and Red Gum for furniture production.
  • Mining: Mineral Sand, Gold and Gypsum.

Before making a decision regarding investing in these resources it is important to understand existing landuse, soil management, surface water and groundwater characteristics and associated issues. It will also be useful to consider the availability and likely cost of acquiring agricultural property throughout the catchment.

General statewide information relating to investing in natural resources, including links to farmer services, agriculture notes, and industry specific information is also available within the Farming and Agriculture pages in the DPI website.

The Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) (external link) is a farmer-driven agricultural organisation that conducts agronomic research on cereal, pulse and oilseed crops grown in the Wimmera-Mallee region.
