Potential Distribution | Present Distribution
Scientific name: Nassella charruana (Arechav.) Barkworth
Common name: Lobed needle grass, Uruguayan Needle Grass
Status: State Prohibited Weed.
Habitat: Lobed needle grass has been found growing primarily in direct sunlight or light shade and appears to prefer wet depressions, but has also been found on stony rises (McLaren 1999). It occurs on fertile soils, such as clay soils (grey/black cracking), the preferred soil type in South America (Rosengurrt et al 1970). Stipoid grasses generally invade plant communities that are already highly degraded and have a history of disturbance, and lands previously used for grazing and farming (Gardener and Sindel 1998). Also known to invade grassland areas in Melbourne (McLaren et al 1998).
