Native and naturalised populations of
C. teneristolon suggest it prefers highland areas with soils that are sandy and poor in nutrients. Weed of crops in semi-arid Kenyan and Tanzanian highlands. Shows a preference for damp open areas or rocky outcrops. In Australia, grows beneath an overstorey of eucalypt along a creek (CRC for Australian Weed Management 2003).
