General Description:

Stemless or short stemmed
succulent annual forb, usually flat and to 50 cm diameter, more erect when growing with taller plants, the stems soft, juicy, ribbed and covered with fine white down.

Leaves
basal, 5 –25 cm long, much-divided into several broadly toothed or jagged lobes, green above, white and downy below, the midrib prominent on the undersurface.

Flowerheads with yellow petals and a dark centre, 5 cm diameter, borne singly on erect hairy stalks 2 –15 cm long. Petals 15 – 20, in one row, lanceolate, 12-25 mm long.

Seeds oblong, enveloped in brown wool that conceals a crown of 6 – 8 short
lanceolate scales.

Flowering spring


Occurrence:

Roadsides, cultivated paddocks, waste areas; on most soil types but more prevalent on loams.
