Water Resource Management

This section of the VRO website is a collaborative effort between the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) (external link) and Department of Primary Industries (DPI). Much of the content was developed within the former Department of Natural Resources and Environment. DSE is now the lead agency in Victoria for the management of water resources across the state. Visit the Water section of DSEs website (external link) for up to date information about: Victoria's Water Allocation Framework, River Health, Irrigation, Water in Cities and Towns, Water Saving and Recycling Projects as well as Water Governance Arrangements.

Groundwater Management
Presents information on the state's 53 Groundwater Management Areas (GMAs), where groundwater has been intensively developed or has the potential for additional development.

Stream Condition & Water Quality
Presents information on Environmental Flows, Streamflow Management Plans, Fish Passage, In-stream Biota, Nutrient Management, Algal Blooms, and Monitoring River Health.

REALM is a generalised computer program that can simulate simple water supply systems as well as large and complex ones. Information about REALM is available on the DSE website (extrnal link) . This includes software and manuals as well as a registration form and details about relevant workshops.

A full text downloadable version of the former Land Conservation Council's Rivers and Streams Special Investigation - Final Recommendations (June 1991) is available on the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council website (external link). These provide an ongoing framework for the use of rivers and streams in Victoria. Recommendations in the text have been edited to reflect government variations and amendments at the time of approval, and subsequent changes. The recommendations are categorised into Victorian heritage rivers, essentially natural catchments, representative rivers, other river values and public land water frontage reserves. These are based upon their scenic, recreational, cultural and nature conservation values.
