Method for Assessing Dryland Salinity

Sites of salt-affected soil caused by groundwater discharge have been mapped for dryland areas in Victoria using a method based on the identification of salt tolerant species. This report, prepared in 1996 by Marg Allan (DPI's Centre for Land Protection Research, Bendigo), discusses the procedure developed for mapping and assessing dryland salinity. This procedure has been adopted statewide, and forms the standard for further dryland salinity mapping projects in Victoria. Primary salinity, present before European settlement, is distinguished from secondary dryland salinity in the report.
