Warrnambool Plain

Back to Biodiversity Home

Warrnambool Plain consists of a distinctive cliffed coastline and low calcareous dune formations, dissected by rivers, inlets and swamplands. The Cainozoic sediments and volcanic deposits dominate the area giving rise to sandy soils (Calcarosols, Tenosols and Podosols) on the dunes and cliffline, and to brown earths and texture contrast soils (Sodosols) and gradational textured soils (Dermosols) on the flat plain which support Lowland Forest and Herb-rich Foothill Forest ecosystems.

Texture contrast soils and fertile peats (Hydrosols and Organosols) in the swamplands support Damp Sands Herb-rich Woodland, Damp Heathland, Damp Heathy Woodland, Damp Heath Scrub and Swamp Scrub ecosystems.
