Victorian Long-term Agro-ecological Sites Network

With natural competitive advantages such as excellent access to water resources, a variety of soil types and a temperate climate, Victoria produces over 25 per cent of Australia's agri-food production from just three per cent of the nation's agricultural land. Agricultural research, carried out within regional agro-ecosystems of these temperate landscapes and world class technology centres is fundamental to improving the competitiveness and sustainability of agricultural industries.

The Department of Primary Industries (Victoria) divisions of Agriculture Development and Primary Industries Research Victoria (PIRVic), are concerned with improving the profitability and market competitiveness of agricultural industries whilst ensuring that such land uses and operations remain both sustainable and environmentally responsible. The Department aims to achieve these goals through its research, industry development and extension activities.

Key initiatives currently in progress are:

Naturally Victorian
The Naturally Victorian initiative is supporting a broad range of research, demonstration and communication activities, which specifically address food safety, food quality, animal welfare and environmental assurance issues for agriculture. These activities are helping to promote and substantiate Victoria's capabilities and assist Victorian producers to remain internationally competitive.

Our Rural Landscape
The Victorian Government is investing $50 million over four years in Our Rural Landscape (ORL), a key strategic initiative to develop innovative technologies for the sustainable development of Victoria's food and agriculture resources in the medium to long-term.
