Technote:
1. VRML: Virtual Reality Modelling Language. It's an open, extensible, industry-standard scene description language for 3-D scenes, or worlds, on the Internet. With VRML and certain software tools, you can create and view distributed, interactive 3-D worlds that are rich with text, images, animation, sound, music and video.
2. Gocad: Gocad is a software solution for modelling geological objects in 3D. It developed mainly from the petroleum industry integrating geological, geophysical and engineering concepts in a computer aided drafting (CAD) platform. It has been developed by an international consortium and continues to be applied in a variety of situations including structural geology around Victoria's mineral fields by the GeoScience Victoria and in understanding groundwater aquifers by PIRVic.
3. Google earth: is a virtual globe program that was originally called Earth Viewer and was created by Keyhole, Inc. It maps the earth by the superimposition of images obtained from satellite imagery, aerial photography and GIS over a 3D globe.
4. GIS: A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system for capturing, storing, analysing and managing data and associated attributes which are spatially referenced to the earth. It's a tool that allows users to create interactive queries (user created searches), analyse the spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results of all these operations.
5. ArcGIS: is an integrated collection of GIS software products for building a complete GIS. ArcGIS enables users to deploy GIS functionality wherever it is needed in desktops, servers, or custom applications; over the Web; or in the field.
6. Shapefile: is a set of files that contain a set of points, arcs, or polygons (or features) that hold tabular data and a spatial location.
7. Spatial Information Exploration & Visualisation Environment (SIEVE): is a collaborative, virtual environment built using the Torque Games Engine (TGE) (www.garagegames.com (external link)). SIEVE has been developed by the CRC-SI in collaboration with DPI, DSE and Geosciences Australia.
8. Arc2SIEVE: is a function that exports GIS data into SIEVE scenario by using ArcGIS.
9. Visual Nature Studio: Visual Nature Studio is a tool that brings visualization to life. Import GIS or geospatial data and make all of the numbers and obscure information into a photorealistic image or animation.
