Fishtrack | Soils
This page presents examples of interactive applications of geographical visualisation developed by the Future Farming Systems Research Division of the Department of Primary Industries.
To view the attached KMZ files you will need to use Google Earth™. A free copy can be downloaded from the Google Earth™ website (external link).
Application 1 - Fishtrack

Screen grab taken while using the Fishtrack KMZ file provided and Google Earth
This example visualises the movement of a single black bream fish through the Gippsland Lakes between 25th November 2005 and 16th June 2006 and has been developed as a temporal animation to best visualise data captured by electronic sensors.
The following Information is recorded by the fish sensors and can be viewed by simply clicking in the Google Earth placemarks. The placemarks instances have been placed above the surface and extruded by the depth reading of the fish above the surface. The reason for this because the placemarks can not be seen below the surface as Google Earth does not have Sub Surface capability.
- GPS Coordinates of each tracking device
- Date and time that the fish triggered the sensor
- Proximity of the fish to the sensor
- Depth that the fish triggered the sensor
The temporal animation of the movement of the bream can be simply run by clicking the 'time series' play button in Google Earth.

Application 2 - Soil Landcsape

Screen grab taken while using the Soil KMZ file provided and Google Earth
This application presents soil-landforms in the Corangamite Catchment Management region in southwestern Victoria using Google Earth.
Soil profiles were described along a gas pipeline trench that traversed the catchment from East to West - providing a unique insight into the soils and landscapes in this region of Victoria.
At each sampled location, the following was recorded.
- GPS coordinates of each sample point
- Soil type
- Soil profile description and photograph
The use of the Google Earth virtual globe technology allows the synthesis of these GIS data, descriptive text and images within a spatially dynamic interactive interface.
The application allows the draping of geomorphic units on aerial imagery and the visualisation of soil profile images at each sampled location. The creation of hyperlinks allows users to access detailed descriptions of soil profiles at each location.
Soils.kmz (KMZ 10.8Mb) this will take some time to download if you are using a slow internet connection.
