Digital geospatial information files can be accessed and downloaded on-line. Web repositories have been established by both governmental and private mapping organisations to streamline how these products are marketed, sold and delivered. The sites include:
- GeoScience Australia (formerly AUSLIG)
- Land Victoria – through its LandChannel site
- Map Machine (National Geographic Society)
These sites have been developed with the express purpose of making maps more readily available to the general public and professional map users. And, they allow the information to be made available with little cost to the providing organisation due to the ‘hands-free’ nature of Web delivery.
The first publicly available on-line environmental information was the Environmental Resources Information Network (ERIN) on-line service (EOS) (a national facility to provide geographically related environmental information required for planning and decision-making). EOS provides public access to tables, maps, images and large databases. Users can undertake their own spatial modelling by passing SQL commands direct to the database.

Distributed Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
In Australia, GIS and hypertext have been married by the CSIRO Division of Fisheries, Brisbane, Queensland to provide metadata on the current status of their GIS database and mapping programme. Hypertext links are embedded in map displays, which link to associated maps, datasets, documents, videos and cross-referenced keywords. Access to the package is provided via the World Wide Web.
| CommonGIS | CommonGIS makes geo-data commonly accessible and usable for everyone, from everywhere, by providing a WWW-based Geographical Information System (GIS) with specific functions for the automatic generation of thematic maps. The target audience includes professional GIS users as well as ‘everyday’ users.

| Landserf | LandSerf is a Geographical Information System for the visualisation and analysis of surfaces. Applications include visualisation of landscapes; geomorphological analysis; gaming development; GIS file conversion; map output; archaeological mapping and analysis; surface modelling and many others. It runs on any platform that supports the Java Runtime Environment (Windows, MacOSX, Unix, Linux etc.)
