| The rainfall in the region is affected by topography and the general westerly origin of rain-bearing winds. Due to the position of ranges tending north-south across the direction of the moisture-bearing winds, a rain shadow extends on the relatively level plains in the area between Lara, Melton and Werribee. The average annual rainfall for recording stations in the rain-shadow area include Werribee (547 mm), Laverton (549 mm), Geelong (552 mm) and Bacchus Marsh (505 mm). Average annual rainfall further east includes Melbourne (657 mm). Just west of the region (near the Brisbane Ranges) at Durdiwarrah, the average annual rainfall is 692 mm. |  Stormclouds near Bacchus Marsh |
