Some 32% of the Port Phillip and Westernport region retains it's locally indigenous vegetation - including important grassland areas. Around 41% of this vegetation is managed for conservation and protected in parks and reserves, whilst an additional 31% is on other public land (see land use map). The remaining 28% of the locally indigenous vegetation occurs on private land.

The region has an extensive range of vegetation types which support more than 3 000 species of native flora. Some 240 of these species are considered threatened. Source: PPWCMA, 2003)

The Draft Native Vegetation Plan (external link) for the region is available for download on the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority website. It contains information on a range of topics including the region's vegetation resources, abundance of vegetation types, vegetation reservation and flora and fauna habitat.
