Land and Water Management
The Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (external link) (formerly CALP Board) is one of ten regional catchment management organisations established across Victoria by the State Government to promote and coordinate improved land and water management. The CMA is primarily an advisory and coordinating body that has strong relationships with the various agencies implementing elements of catchment management.
The CMA is currently building a framework of strategic, priority setting documents for the major natural resources in the region. It is working with 5 Catchment Committees across the region, one in each of the Westernport, Dandenong, Yarra, Maribyrnong and Werribee catchments which provide strong links to Local Government, community groups and various agencies working on natural resource management issues in the region. Unlike other CMAs in Victoria, the PPW CMA does not implement major works - this is done by a number of agencies including Local Government, Melbourne Water (external link) and DSE/DPI.
Catchment Action Plans (CAP) have been developed by Catchment Implementation Committees (CIC) . They will be used to promote partnerships in the catchment and to guide the development of annual works programs by agencies, Local Government, community groups and other stakeholders by identifying priorities for local action including on-ground works. Catchment Action Plans have been based on the priority natural resource management needs of the catchment (e.g. invasive plant and animal control, waterway management and flood protection, water quality protection, integrated land management, native vegetation and habitat protection).

A full text downloadable version of the former Land Conservation Council's Final Recommendations for the Melbourne Area District 1 Review (June 1987) (external link) is available on the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council website. These provide an ongoing framework for public use of land in the area. Recommendations are grouped under major headings, such as Parks and Marine Reserves, Reference Areas, Wildlife, Water Production, State Forest and Timber Production and so on. Key recommendations are for the Organ Pipes National Park, Werribee Gorge State Park, Harold Holt Marine Complex, and additions to the Brisbane Ranges National Park and Lerderderg State Park. The recommendations in the text incorporate those of the LCC's original Melbourne Study area investigation, and have been edited to reflect government variations and amendments at the time of approval, and subsequent changes.
