Development of the North Central region is dependent upon its natural resource base, including its landform, soil, surface water, groundwater and vegetation. The need for primary industry development (ie: agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and farm forestry) is an integral element of the North Central Regional Catchment Strategy. Specific regional development initiatives throughout the North Central catchment are available in the Loddon, Campaspe, Avoca and Avon-Richardson Regional Development Programs. These are programs of the North Central Catchment Management Authority (external link). There are also relevant initiatives and studies of the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), including the Water for Agriculture Initiative and the Loddon-Murray 2000 reports (see below), A Land Suitability Analysis for Selected Agribusiness in the Loddon-Campaspe Region and Campaspe Land Suitability Assessment.
