The North East Catchment Management Authority (external link) is responsible for surface water management in the region. Recent waterway management has taken place in the following areas:
Ovens, King and Blackdog area:
The Myrtleford Breakaway Project - aiming to reduce the risk of a breakout of the Ovens River into Happy Valley Creek.
Barwidgee Creek Stream Bed Stabilisation: which aims to stabilise the creek through a grade control structure to complement existing works. Willow control was also undertaken throughout 1998-99.
Sediment in Fifteen Mile Creek: works focused on stabilising sediments, creating a stable alignment and increasing bank stability where necessary. Revegetation works aim to restore streamside and instream health.
Willow control in the Ovens River: included chemical and mechanical control measures.
Minor bank stabilisation, willow control and sediment removal in Boggy Creek.
Black Willow control in the Lower Ovens River and general willow control in the King River gorge.
Wodonga, Kiewa and Indigo area:
Completion of the Lower Kiewa River Project: aiming to reduce the risk of a breakout of the Kiewa River into Finn’s Creek.
NECMA and Landcare Groups arresting erosion on Gap Creek.
Rock beaching works on Yackandandah Creek to stabilise banks.
Stabilisation of Wodonga/Felltimber Creeks following willow infestation.
Upper Murray and Mitta area:
Various works on Nariel Creek following the 1998 flood - funded by the Natural Disaster Fund.
Continuing stabilisation and revegetation program of Johnson and Cottontree Creeks.
Establishment of Mitta Mitta River Catchment Co-ordinating Group was formed and has written a Waterway Management Strategy, aiming to assist in the improvement of the health of the river downstream of Dartmouth Dam to Lake Hume.
Rock beaching, fencing, revegetation and willow control on Cudgewa Creek.
NECMA (1999)
Goulburn-Murray Water (external link) also provides natural resource management services to the Government under contract. These services support land and water management programs in northern Victoria.
