Vegetation Management

see also Statewide Vegetation Management | Threats and Managmenet Issues | Regional Planning | Relevant Management Agencies

A number of management strategies are in place to promote the protection of vegetation areas within the North East region and some significant sites are protected under such arrangements (NRE, 1997a). Some of these may be relevant across the whole region while others may be specific to a particular area, land tenure or address specific vegetation management issues.

A major focus of on-ground revegetation works in the North East region has been protection of remnant vegetation by landholders. Funding support has been provided through the Land Protection Incentive Scheme (LPIS) and the Care of Remnants Incentive Scheme Bushcare project.

The State Biodiversity Strategy intends that there is a reversal across the entire landscape of the long-term decline in the extent and quality of native vegetation, leading to a net gain, with the first target being no net loss by the year 2001. To this end the North East Regional Vegetation Plan aims to ensure that significant natural areas in private ownership are conserved. Its main areas of activity are the Conservation Covenant Program, the Revolving Fund and community education programs. In conjunction with private landholders, it has secured the protection of 387 hectares of bushland through conservation covenants at nine sites throughout the North East region.

Finally, through the Replanting Victoria 2020 Initiative, the State Government initiative is investing $9 million, which is double the current investment in revegetation throughout Victoria. Three components of this initiative have begun in the North East, including Greenhouse Action North East, Carbon Cropping and Carbon Tracking.
