Development of the North East region is dependent upon its natural resource base, including its landform, soil, surface water, groundwater and vegetation. The need for primary industry development (ie. agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and plantation/farm forestry) is one element of the North East Regional Catchment Strategy.
The regional development program within the Regional Catchment Strategy aims to:
provide advice to local government to ensure sound land use and statutory requirements are incorporated into development proposals.
develop a climate of cooperation with industry and regional development authorities in achieving sustainable and profitable development of land and water resources.
expand opportunities for the long-term development of primary industries – eg. North East Regional Farm Forestry Program, Food and Agriculture Initiative.
