In North East Victoria, the climate is as variable as the landscape. For example, along the Murray River (at Wodonga) annual maximum temperatures average 22.1°C while the annual average is 8.9°C. During January, the average maximum temperature is 31.8°C with an average minimum of 15.2°C. In July, Wodonga’s average maximum temperature is 12.6°C and the average minimum is 3.1°C. Mean annual rainfall at Wodonga is 715 mm.

In comparison, the alpine region is significantly colder and wetter throughout the year. Rainfall generally increases according to elevation with the highest average rainfall in the catchment being 2 400 mm per annum at Mt Bogong (DWR, 1989). At the Mt Buffalo weather station, average maximum temperatures are just 11.6°C while the minimum annual average is 5°C. During January, the average maximum temperature is 19.5°C and minimum 10.8°C. In July, Mt Buffalo’s average temperature high is 3.7°C and its low -0.7°C. Mean annual rainfall at Mt Buffalo is 1 911 mm.
