Surface Water Resources

In the Glenelg Basin 33% of water used is derived from surface water, whilst the other 67% is from groundwater resources. Surface water is mainly supplied from the Rocklands, Moora Moora and Konong Wootong Reservoirs. The major water quality issue in the Glenelg River Basin is high salinity. Salinities in the main river systems generally increase downstream. In the tributaries of the Glenelg and Wannon Rivers the salinities can be high. Severe dryland salting due to the removal of natural vegetation has been identified as a major cause of increasing salinity in the streams of the Basin.

A massive 76 000 ML is exported from the Rocklands and Moora Moora Reservoirs to Avon, Mallee and Wimmera regions through the Wimmera Mallee stock and domestic system (DWR, 1989).

The Streams, Lakes and Reservoirs map is generalised and should only be used to broadly identify major hydrological features (including water storages) throughout the region.

The map was derived from the HYDRO500 and TEMP500 layers of the DPI/DSE Corporate Geospatial Data Library. Original data came from Division of Survey and Mapping's VICBASE. This is a 1983 Digital Map of Victoria, formed using the AUSLIG 1:250 000 as its base control.
