Soils of the Bairnsdale and Dargo Regions

The development of this comprehensive guide which includes the major land systems of the Bairnsdale and Dargo regions has been a joint project between the East Gippsland Landcare Network and Department of Primary Industries with funding from the Natural Heritage Trust.

Ian Sargeant, soil scientist, surveyed and area of 22,000 hectares of freehold land to develop the 18 major land systems detailed in the guide. The area surveyed stretched from Stratford to Lakes Entrance and north to the Mitchell River National Park and Dargo. Ian combined information from a 1992 Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands Survey, a 1977 CSIRO unpublished survey by Little and Ward and his own field observations to produce the land system information.

The guide contains regional information relating to geological and geomorphological features, soil chemical data, physical descriptions, pictures of the soil profiles and landscapes, indigenous vegetation and significant weeds. Also included is a large amount of general information relating to the interpretation of soil tests.
