Agriculture

Agriculture is an important sector of the East Gippsland regional economy in terms of its contribution to Gross Value of Production (GVP), value adding and employment. GVP for agriculture is about $105 million per annum - about $37 million is earned from cropping and $34 million from extensive livestock industries. Horticulture has grown quickly over recent years, producing just over $30 million worth of goods in 1996/97 (ABS, 1997). The total area of farms in the region is approximately 419 300 hectares, which is comprised of 950 farms. This equates to just under 5% of the total area under farming in Victoria and nearly 3% of the total number of farms.Photo: Vegetable Cropping

The agricultural industry employs 15% of the region’s salary and wage earners, compared with the State average of 4.5% (East Gippsland CaLPB 1997).
