About EH&C Platform
The Environmental Health and Chemistry Platform is committed to the provision of high quality, innovative science and services to support the objectives of PIRVic. The EH&C platform provides a combined strength of around 60 highly skilled scientific and technical staff located at 4 research and development centres throughout Victoria.
The four EH&C location centres include Horsham, Hamilton, Werribee and Queenscliff.
The EH&C platform consists of two sub-platforms, each led by a Statewide Leader. The two sub-platforms are:
- Organic Chemistry - Dr. Craige Trenerry, SWL
- Inorganic Chemistry - Mr. Bruce Shelley, SWL
The Environmental Health & Chemistry Platform provide analytical chemistry services to maintain the State's capacity to respond to emerging agricultural, environmental and public health issues and to support R&D activities across DPI. Scientific capability focuses on analytical chemistry procedures covering traditional to leading edge techniques in spectroscopy and mass spectrometry coupled with separation science expertise performed on an array of state-of-the-art instrumentation.
R&D activity is focussed on improving environmental health, primary production and product integrity, with particular emphasis on:
- Food safety, together with environment and health issues encompassing pesticide and antibiotic use in agriculture;
- Isolation and identification of bioactive compounds from plants and grains to support health claims for functional foods;
- Assisting the food, grain and livestock industries to provide high quality products for their customers;
- Quality of aquatic resources derived from natural, marine and waste sources;
- Constraints affecting the efficient reuse of industrial and municipal wastes;
- Evaluation and application of new and emerging spectroscopic technologies for the rapid assessment of soil condition and environmental health;
- Analytical chemistry and interpretation to support other PIRVic science platforms and other Government agencies.
