Landscape Systems

Research Director: Angela Avery

"The Landscape Systems platform undertakes ecosystem-based research to support the sustainable management of Victoria’s landscapes. It does this by integrating the knowledge of environmental, economic and social impacts and their interactions into knowledge frameworks and decision support mechanisms. The knowledge and tools are then utilised by many clients including farmers, other land managers and government policy analysts".

About Landscape Systems Platform
Landscape Systems science addresses community concerns at the “systems” level rather than at the paddock, farm or sectoral level. It allows science and policy makers to deal with water, land and climate issues in an interconnected way with agricultural production systems. By understanding the function and resilience of ecosystems, the platform addresses the increasing emphasis on the ‘health’ of the whole ecological system. This is the key to ensuring the long-term maintenance of harvested resources, efficient production systems, and ecosystems services.

The platform creates and applies knowledge of:
  • landscape variation, structure and function,
  • impact assessment of land use change,
  • design criteria for sustainable land use and management systems,
  • environmental best practice for agriculture,
  • alternative, innovative management options for land managers, and
  • tools that assist decision making at farm to catchment scale.
Landscape Systems consists of three areas of expertise: Ecosystems Analysis, Spatial Sciences and Systems Modelling.
