Project Summary
Determine, using reflection seismic, the geometry and nature of key faults bounding basement zones, the internal structure of the basement zones, and the relationship of major gold deposits to major regional structures in central Victoria.
Data was collected as part of the pmd*CRC T13 seismic project.
Products
The seismic reflection profiles and data were interpreted during 2007 and presented at a workshop in Feb 2008 to industry and academia. The interpreted profile is available on DVD from GSV on request. GSV is collaborating with Geoscience Australia in the preparation of two research papers which have been submitted to Economic Geology and the Australian Journal of Earth Sciences for publication.

Drill hole Database
Project contact
Paul McDonald
Project Summary
The ERD drill hole database is the State’s official central depot for data and information on holes drilled for a range of purposes. The accuracy and availability of these data facilitates minerals/petroleum exploration and mining/extraction companies to make informed business decisions. Thus, it is imperative that the database is of high quality standard and up to date.
This project is capturing and validating new open file gold drill hole data, as well as updating and revalidating existing open file gold drill hole data within the GU area. The accessibility of these data can assist explorers determine the extent of previous work and improve their interpretation capabilities.
Products
Updated corporate databases and delivery improved to international standards by August 2009.
Depth to basement maps and associated report by August 2009.

Gravity Survey
Project contact
Paul McDonald
Project Summary
Increased gravity data density across strike between the Mount William and Avoca Faults shows Cainozoic movements on Palaeozoic faults and pre-Cainozoic topographic highs. The faults were possible conduits for gold mineralisation and the topographic highs are possible sites of silicification/gold mineralisation.
This project collected 8050 new gravity stations at 500 m spacing across strike in the most prospective covered area in Victoria (between Avoca and Mt Williams Faults).

Project Summary
The ERD geochemistry database is the State’s official central depot for data and information collected from open file exploration reports. The accuracy and easy access to these data facilitates minerals exploration and mining/extraction companies to make informed business decisions. Thus, it is imperative that the database is kept current and of high quality standard.
This project will re-engineer ERD’s geochemistry database and produce geochemical anomaly maps for the GU area.

Helicopter-borne Versatile Time Domain Electromagnetic System (VTEM)
Project contact
Paul McDonald
Project Summary
The Department of Primary Industries contracted Geotech Airborne Pty Ltd to acquire Helicopter-borne Versatile Time Domain Electromagnetic System (VTEM) data along four traverses which are coincident with a deep seismic reflection profile that DPI conducted in June 2006.
The VTEM data were collected in April 2007 and totalled 381 line kilometres.
The aims of the survey were to;
- Map and characterise the conductivity responses of the geology
- Determine the depth to basement
- Map and characterise the conductivity response of possible saline ground waters
- Determine the suitability (eg. depth penetration) of the VTEM system for use in Victoria
Products
Gold Undercover Report 9 - A Versatile Time Domain Electromagnetic (VTEM) survey along the 2006 central Victorian seismic transect is now available for free download or to purchase on CD with the accompanying VTEM data in the Online Store. | |

Exploration Toolkit
Hylogger Analysis
Project contact
Paul McDonald
Project Summary
Capture SWIR spectra and digital photographs of selected drill core and chips, in GSV custody, with CSIRO HyLogger equipment to determine if diagnostic alteration related to mineralisation is present.
The data and interpretation provided input into the Gold Undercover Lithogeochemistry project.
