Improve Angler Access Program

The Government is committed to improving angler access for fishers across Victoria.

Guide to Inland Angling Waters
As part of this initiative the Government will update the Guide to Inland Angling Waters of Victoria which identifies boat, vehicle and foot access to major inland and estuarine waters and provides accurate descriptions of the fish species they contain.

The Guide to Inland Angling Waters of Victoria is now in a final draft stage and is expected to be finalised and available in later in 2009. Distribution options and processes are being finalised.

On-ground Works
In addition, the Government will work with the Victorian Recreational Fishing Peak Body (VRFish) to identify priority areas where access can be improved for recreational fishers. This may include building paths, fences, stiles or the provision of signs.

Work on improving access for boat based anglers has been completed at Lake Purrumbete as a result of $50,000 being contributed through this program. As a result, local and visiting anglers now have improved access to thousands of trout stocked into the lake by Fisheries Victoria.

Other projects which are currently in-progress include:
Black berry spraying to open up access on the Howqua River.
Creating new access points and installing low use camping areas on the Jamieson River.
Improving access for both boat and land-based anglers at Aringa Reservoir near Port Fairy.
Producing site designs for the construction of two fishing platforms and a concrete access path at the Werribee River.

Other potential projects that are being considered include fishing platforms at Lakers Cutting near Point Lonsdale, and an anglers’ boardwalk at Kow Swamp.

If you want to register your interest in improving access to your local fishery please send an email to enhanced.fishing@dpi.vic.gov.au describing what the improvements are and why they are needed.
