Draft Victorian Rocklobster Fishery Management Plan
The Minister Responsible for Fisheries, Joe Helper, MP, signed an intention to declare the Victorian Rocklobster Fishery Management Plan (VRFMP) on 16 November 2008.
The primary management objective of the new plan will be the sustainable use of the rocklobster resource in an environment of increasing community awareness of the implications of utilising marine resources and the uncertainties arising from climate change. The plan specifies the policies and strategies for managing the rocklobster fishery in Victoria for at least five years from declaration.
Key aspects of this management plan include:
- a defined resource rebuilding strategy and a new decision framework to provide clear guidance for the Total Allowable Commercial Catch-setting process
- establishment and use of economic performance indicators for the fishery
- continued monitoring for changes in ecological risks to rocklobster stocks and habitats
- a process for implementing an effective method of estimating recreational rocklobster catch
- establishment of a Rocklobster Fishery Management Advisory Forum as a communication process to assist in improving consultative arrangements.
Interested parties have until 3 March 2009 to comment on the Draft VRFMP.
Written submissions on the Draft VRFMP should be sent to Bill Lussier, A/Manager Fisheries Resource Planning, Fisheries Victoria, PO Box 4440, Melbourne VIC 3001 or bill.lussier@dpi.vic.gov.au.
