Eildon Pondage Family Fishing Day - 20 October 2007
Hats and sunscreen were required on a glorious warm spring day and Eildon Pondage offered some exciting fishing for families that attended this free DPI Family Fishing Day.
Volunteers from Fishcare Victoria and various angling clubs were on hand to help children learn to set up their lines, wind in and land an exciting catch. Many families travelled from outside of the region to attend the event, coming from as far as Moonee Ponds, Keilor Downs and Geelong.
Major highlights of the day included:
The morning fishing session saw the capture of 18 large (>1 kg) rainbow trout.
Five lucky children had the experience of catching their first ever fish!
The Lions Club of Eildon providing a free BBQ lunch for all registered children.
A prize draw after lunch provided families with an opportunity to win fishing rods, gift vouchers from local providers and accommodation packages.
A great day was capped off with an afternoon of demonstrations and workshops for children focusing on developing fishing techniques and skills. Children had a go at casting at targets and learnt how to tie the knots and rigs needed to set up the ideal bait.
A local chef demonstrated ways to cook rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon. Samples were provided and a mouth watering experience followed.
After their experience at Eildon Pondage:
- 57% of families planned to return to fish at Eildon Pondage quite often
- 96% said their fishing knowledge had improved as a result of the day.
A huge thank you to our partners:
- Lions Club of Eildon,
- Fishcare Victoria,
- The Victorian Recreational Fishing Peak body (VRFish),
- Murrindindi Shire Council
- The Australian Trout Foundation,
and volunteers from various angling clubs who provided support and assistance in preparing for the event and on the day.
Here are some of the comments that we received back on evaluation forms:
“It was an enjoyable day with friendly and approachable volunteers. Thanks.”
“An excellent day for beginners.”
“Excellent family outing.” |
