Fish stocking increased by 30%

The Government will enhance recreational fishing opportunities through a 30% increase in fish stocking over the next 4 years. The increase will include trout and native fish species into freshwater systems throughout the State.

Even though we face ongoing drought conditions across much of the State, there are a number of water bodies that retain capacity for stocking.

The Government will continue to explore options to increase stocking numbers in those remaining water bodies.

The Government are also examining a number of further stocking options including opening up new water bodies to recreational fishing and stocking them accordingly, and exploring opportunities for stocking new species.

For further information on salmonid and native fish stocking and the Departments stocking history see our Fish Stocking website.

Update:

  • Last year Fisheries Victoria stocked approximately 1.2 million salmonids and native fish in waters throughout Victoria
  • This year so far Fisheries Victoria have already stocked over 1.2 million native fish throughout Victoria and are anticipating an excellent salmonid stocking season as well.

Every year Regional Consultation Meetings (CONS) are held across the state in March 2009. These forums will help identify further opportunities for moving towards the commitment.
