New native fish production facility in Victoria

After the success of bringing trout production back “in house” at Snobs Creek in 2005, the Government is committed to producing its own native species for stocking into Victorian waters.

Currently, the majority of native fish stocked into Victorian waterways, such as golden perch and Murray cod are produced privately in New South Wales.

By providing the opportunity to produce native fish in Victoria, the Government will improve the reliability of supply and create further capacity to meet increasing native fish stocking commitments.

The new production facility will be operating in conjunction with facilities at Snobs Creek and Queenscliff to explore production of current and new species for stocking.

Work is continuing to identify the preferred location for the native fish production facility. The key species to be produced at the facility are to be golden perch and Murray cod.
