Draft Corangamite Fishery Management Plan

The Hon. Joe Helper MP, Minister for Agriculture, announced his intention to declare the Corangamite Fishery Management Plan (CFMP) in releasing the Draft Management Plan for public comment. The purpose of the Management Plan is to specify the objectives, strategies and performance measures for managing recreational fishing activities in the rivers and impoundments across the Corangamite Fishery. The Management Plan describes: The key recreational fishing waterways and target species of the Corangamite Fishery; Current management arrangements for fishing activities and for other relevant issues that may impact on fisheries resources in the Corangamite Fishery; Strategies, goals, objectives, performance indicators and actions for management of fishing activities in the Corangamite Region; and A process for addressing other resource management issues that can impact recreational fisheries.

The Management Plan is being developed in accordance with Part 3 of the Fisheries Act 1995 (the Act). The Act also requires the Minister to publish a notice of intention to declare a management plan at least 60 days before the declaration of the final management plan is made.

The Management Plan is being developed with assistance from a Steering Committee which has an independent chair and representatives from the Victorian Recreational Fishing Body (VRFish), the Fisheries Co-Management Council, Southern Rural Water, Barwon Water, the Department of Sustainability & Environment, the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority and the Wathaurong and Framlingham Aboriginal groups.

The Management Plan will provide management direction of the Corangamite Fishery for the next five years.
